Phyllis Nicholls
We were all saddened to hear of the passing last week of Phyllis Nicholls a much-respected member of our swimming community who contributed so much to our sport. She was initially involved with swimming when the new pool was opened at Corsham and along with many others was instrumental in forming a new club in the town. Since that time, the club have had a distinguished history producing many quality swimmers at county level and above.
Phyllis was not an ordinary club member but worked behind the scenes tirelessly to ensure the club was run to a very high standard. She became involved with the County Swimming Association as a well-respected official, ever present at local and county events. When the county was looking for an Assistant Secretary, we found in Phyllis an exceptional administrator who dealt with minuting all our Executive meetings – always doing so with great accuracy and independence. She rarely spoke at county meetings but did so quietly and firmly if she felt that clarification was necessary or if we were straying in the wrong direction.
Phyllis has only recently handed over the task of Minute Secretary, but retained the invaluable task of making sure that everyone was fed with the right information and paperwork before our county meetings.
In recognition of her work she was a former County President and Life Member of the association – much respected by us all
It is often said that volunteers are easy to replace – but there are always exceptions. Phyllis will be missed more than most, not only by the sport of swimming but her ever present husband, close family and particularly her Church which was so important to her. No dealt many will want to pay their respects in due course and the funeral arrangements will be circulated when known.
